In extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), blood is pumped to the cardiac support machine outside the body to remove carbon dioxide and return oxygenated blood to the body. When lung function is impaired and gas exchange cannot be completed, ECMO can be used to transfer venous blood into the ECMO instrument, exchange gas through the extracorporeal membranes, and reinject arterial blood into the body for use by various organs.
